Traditional use:
Although large quantities of salt were stored in ceramic jars, small pyramidal containers of salt or the tung-nghop were hung above the wooden kitchen hearth with a rattan handle, keeping salt smoked & dry, and within easy reach. The salt was retrieved via the small opening using small hooked stick.
These containers are rarely found today and difficult to make as very long pandanus strips are used to weave a single container.
Contemporary use:
As a conversation piece & funky table ornament.
